After 15 minutes, New Zealand was pleased with Tom Latham's decision to put England in. Trent Boult had dismissed Jonny Bairstow with the first ball of the match, although Devon Conway made a superb catch and curled one back to dismiss Joe Root.

Ben Stokes walked out to join Dawid Malan at 13-2. They had added 199 by the time Malan fell for a 95-ball 96 (12 fours, 1 six), strengthening his position as Bairstow's opening partner ahead of Jason Roy

Jos Buttler beat his way to a 24-ball 38 as Stokes marched on. He eventually finished with 182 off 124 balls, breaking Roy's England record of 180 against Australia in Melbourne in 2017/18. He blasted 15 fours and nine sixes before being caught at square leg by Ben Lister.

In the end, England were bowled out for 368 in 48.1 overs. Boult, who finished with 5-51, his sixth ODI five-wicket haul, hastened the collapse. Only Mitchell Starc (9) has more among active bowlers, with Mustafizur Rahman having five. They are all left-arm quick bowlers.

Chris Woakes (3-31) and Reece Topley (2-31) knocked the wind out of New Zealand's sails, lowering them to 37-4. Glenn Phillips (72 in 76 balls) delivered the sole resistance, while Rachin Ravindra hit out in his 22-ball 28.

Liam Livingstone (3-16) finished the game in 39 overs to help England win by 181 runs. The fourth and final ODI will be played at Lord's on Friday, September 15.
